Radiant Heat
Radiant heating systems deliver warmth straight to the floors. They work mainly through radiant heat transfer sending heat directly from a hot surface to people and objects in the room using infrared radiation. Think of it like feeling the cozy heat radiating from a hot stove burner even when you’re standing across the room.
Radiant Types
Hot Water
Also known as hydronic, water tubes run under the flooring to provide heat.
Radiant Benefits
Radiant heating comes with a bunch of perks. It’s more efficient than baseboard heating and often beats forced-air systems because it eliminates duct losses. Allergy sufferers tend to love radiant heat since it doesn’t spread allergens around like forced air can. Hydronic (liquid-based) systems use less electricity, making them perfect for places where electric bills give you heartburn. Plus, hydronic systems can heat the liquid using gas, oil, wood-fired boilers, solar water heaters, or even mix and match.
Despite what the name hints at, radiant floor heating leans heavily on convection. Using natural heat-circulation where air warmed by the floor rises and spreads warmth. Heads up: radiant floor heating systems are quite different from the radiant panels you find on walls and ceilings.
